Learning from Moana: Wayfinding as Improvement Science in Schools
Wednesday, January 14, 2026 (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM) (EST)
Description
This Lunch and Learn session will help educators find their 'way' with leading schools through improvement. Wayfinding refers to the process and systems that help people navigate and orient themselves within physical or virtual spaces. It’s both a behavioral process (how people find their way) and a design discipline (how environments are structured to support that process). Wayfinding is about understanding where you are, where you want to go, and how to get there. Designers use it to make complex environments — such as airports, hospitals, museums, campuses, and cities — easy to navigate. The Moana movies have placed a spotlight on the ancient Pacific tradition of 'Wayfinding'. How can this tradition help guide our schools using 'Improvement Science' Both are processes of sensemaking — creating understanding within complexity so purposeful action can occur. Dr. Kathleen Budge will be our guide for this adventure in learning Kathleen M.
